With the vast appearances of Italian restaurants around the world it is a clear sign that Italian cuisine is now more than an acquired taste. There was a time that Italian cuisine is just for the people who can go to those expensive Italian restaurants, up until to this day that everybody knows how to eat pasta and pizza.

What is Italian cuisine?

Italian cuisine is traditional Italian food. It is regionalised, meaning the cooking is different in different parts of Italy. It is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only two to four main ingredients so it is easy to cook. Although Italian dishes are regional it has proliferated with variations throughout the country.

Italian cuisine is well known and well regarded for its diverse variety of pasta. Pasta is the staple food of the traditional Italian cuisine it is the counterpart of rice on Asian countries. Pasta comes from different variations depending on shapes and sizes such as spaghetti (thin rods), lasagne (sheets), rigatoni (tubes or cylinders) and gnocchi (made with potatoes or pumpkins). Pasta is also categorized in two basic styles: dried and fresh. Dried pasta was made without eggs and you can store it up to two years under ideal condition these are the ones that you can buy on your local supermarkets. While fresh pasta can only be kept for a couple of days in the refrigerator, these are the ones that you made from scratch. Pasta is generally cooked by means of boiling.

Aside from pasta, Italian cuisine’s famous dish is pizza. Pizza is a flatbread topped with tomato sauce and cheese along with the selection of meat vegetables and condiment and cooked in the oven. Pizza is commonly sold fresh or frozen in whole or in portions and has become the common fast food item in Europe and North America (even in Asia, there are a lot of Italian restaurants in Singapore that carries the best pizza).

Other Italian dish that has become well known all around the world are:

  • Risotto, rice dish cooked in broth until it has a creamy consistency. The broth can be from meat, fish or vegetables. Some of the ingredients of risotto ate wine, butter and onion.
  • Prosciutto is a dry-cured ham usually thin sliced and served uncooked.
  • Tiramisu is a coffee flavoured custard dessert. It is made of ladyfingers that were dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar and mascarpone cheese, flavoured with cocoa.

The best-selling point of Italian cuisine is its dishes are rich of flavours. It is bold and satisfying without being too heavy aside that it is not very complicated to execute. They say that Italian cuisine is more of an emotional kind of cuisine. Eating it is to experience it. It’s two of the main dish, pasta and pizza has become popular with kids. All of these were the reason why there is an Italian restaurant in Singapore and everywhere.
