Tower Crane and Its Importance to the Construction Industry

In construction industry, tower cranes are the ones used to lift heavy materials including steel structures, concrete slabs, cement mixing machines, bulk sand bags, machinery equipment like power generators, and many other objects. These things are often found on top of the buildings together with some crane parts for repair and maintenance once needed.

Tower cranes are relevant to buildings that are constructed higher than certain heights. In the first phase of construction, tower crane is one of the most useful machines that helps erect the building. It also keeps the construction workers and other people safe. These cranes are normally fixed on top of an under construction building which is the ideal location for it to reach the different areas of the structure for dropping and lifting of materials.

The three Basic Parts of Tower Crane

  1. The Base

The tower crane’s base is very important as it forms the interface between the concrete building top and the tall steel structure. In human structure, it is similar to the spine that supports the body. The crane’s steel structure is then bolted to the pad of concrete.

  1. The Tower or Mast

The tower or the mast is connected to the base which gives height to the crane.  It has guide and guard rails that guide the elevator.  The elevator is important to the operation of construction because it helps the maintenance technician and the operator on reaching the arm of the machinery and the cab from its base.

  1. The Slewing Unit

The mobile part of the tower crane is the slewing unit. It has the capacity to rotate up to 360 degrees. Slewing is the term used to present the crane’s rotation around the axis. This unit is a combination of set of big motors and gears that help the crane to slew.

What is the Weight Limitation of Tower Crane?

A tower crane can lift at the maximum weight of 18 metric tons. It will not be able to handle heavy weights like the gantry cranes at shipyards.  Tower cranes limitation for lifting begins with its base. Each of its component affects the tower crane’s’ load lifting capacity.

Also take note that as the distance from crane centre increases, the quantity of weight to be lifted keeps on decreasing. Therefore, it is much better to lift loads that are closer to the centre of the crane.

The Sequence of Erection

Everyone in the construction industry is required to follow the sequence of erection when constructing a building. Any related errors, small or big, will affect the structure. Initially, the area is checked and inspected by a surveyor before its construction and usage. Well-educated and licensed operators are the only ones allowed to operate this machine. These people have passed different levels of examinations and health diagnosis since they will be functioning several meters away from the ground most of the time.

They are also well-versed with the system of load distribution. They even monitor the abnormalities and stresses when lifting through a computer which is programmed to measure the load moment and the bending calculations.
